“Prominent Branches” is a satirical play on my associations, triggered by the way Members of Parliament hold wreaths to themselves like shields of flowers, silent and serious, while conferring honours. As if hiding from something behind them. The shield is hard, and it protects the body’s flesh from being struck by another hard object. If we follow these polar tangents: hard-soft, then the flower shield, made of natural materials, should protect something unnatural, something artificial. Furthermore, the public worship of responsible authorities and public figures is, for me, an indirect likening to the achievements and merits of our enlighteners and heroes. It’s an indicative gesture that shows the protagonists as direct followers in activity and responsibility. So perhaps this disparity is the unnaturalness I find implicit in the solemn presence at and participation in such events.
