The following project is particularly dear to me. It is a genuine collaboration in which I had full creative and art-direction responsibilities, made possible by Yordan, the author, and the support of the National Culture Fund of Bulgaria.
The book features a fragile, unbound cover that tears apart upon the first opening. This effect is intentional, conceived as a reflection of the author’s acknowledgement of impermanence. A single illustration on the front page is the only indication of the book’s title, which is shared with the chapter on page 31.
As a counterpoint and a quiet protest to the conventions of classic literature, the typesetting deliberately does the opposite of what is expected. The titles of the short stories appear entirely in lowercase, while the page numbers are set in a large type, occupying the visual role traditionally reserved for titles.
On the front sleeve are clothing patterns, each representing one of the eleven short stories. Their corresponding page numbers are indexed here, effectively replacing the table of contents. By moving it to the wrapped cover, the design further disrupts conventional book structure and reading logic.
